Brunel Sanctuary Scholarship 2025/26
Brunel University London is offering the Brunel Sanctuary Scholarship, a vital initiative that provides full tuition fee waivers and free on-campus accommodation to students seeking asylum in the UK. Introduced in 2018, this scholarship supports individuals fleeing persecution by granting access to higher education.

Award Details
Value
- Full tuition fee waiver per year of study.
- Guaranteed, allocated, and paid-for accommodation in an ensuite room on campus for up to 52 weeks per year (no cash alternative for off-campus residents).
- Total Scholarships Available: 5 awards.
Duration
- Maximum four years for a full-time undergraduate course, including a foundation year.
- Maximum five years for a sandwich course, including a foundation year.
- No fee waiver for the placement year in a sandwich course.
- Integrated Master’s students will receive free accommodation in their final year but no additional fee waiver.
Application Process
- Submit the scholarship application form by midnight on 22nd April 2025.
- Provide evidence of immigration status via email to scholarships@brunel.ac.uk before the deadline.
- Incomplete applications will not be considered.
- Shortlisted applicants will be invited for an informal interview in June 2025.
- Scholarship recipients must stay in regular contact with the Student Support and Welfare Team.
Eligibility Criteria
A) Immigration Status
Applicants must belong to one of the following categories:
- Asylum Seeker (with no study restrictions from the Home Office).
- Refugee Status, including those under the Syrian Vulnerable Person Relocation Scheme or similar programs.
- Discretionary Leave to Remain from an asylum claim.
- Humanitarian Protection status.
- Family Reunion Scheme settlement.
- Limited Leave to Remain as a family member of a refugee (under 18 years old).
- Limited Leave to Remain on Human Rights Grounds.
B) Additional Requirements
- Must have applied to Brunel University London for the 2025/26 academic year.
- Must be classified as a Home fee-paying student under UK government regulations.
- Must have an Unconditional Firm (UF) offer before the Scholarship Allocation Panel reviews applications in October.
- Deferred entry applicants are not eligible.
- Must have immigration status allowing registration at Brunel University London.
C) Who is NOT Eligible?
- Applicants classified as Overseas or Channel Islands/Isle of Man for tuition fees.
- Those enrolled at the Brunel Language Centre (BLC).
- Applicants entering a course at Level 5 (Year 2) or Level 6 (Year 3).
- Those who already hold an undergraduate degree.
- Current Brunel University London or Brunel Pathway College students.
Required Proof of Eligibility
Applicants must provide one of the following documents:
- Biometric Residence Permit (BRP).
- Home Office Letter confirming immigration status.
- Passport with relevant visa vignettes.
- Asylum Application Registration Card.
Brunel University London may verify applicants’ immigration status with the Home Office. Consent will be required on the application form.
Scholarship Allocation Process
The scholarship is awarded in three phases:
Phase 1 (April 2025):
- Applications are reviewed for eligibility.
- Non-eligible applicants will be notified.
Phase 2 (May 2025):
- Eligible applications are assessed by the Scholarship Allocation Panel.
Phase 3 (June 2025):
- Shortlisted applicants are invited for an informal interview.
- Unsuccessful applicants will be notified.
Scholarship Confirmation (September 2025):
- Awards are confirmed after results are received.
- If an applicant withdraws or fails to meet entry requirements, the scholarship will be withdrawn.
Scholarship Conditions
- Only one scholarship is awarded per student per academic year.
- Sanctuary Scholarship recipients are not eligible for any other Brunel scholarship or bursary.
- Priority may be given to students from the Hillingdon Virtual School.
Fee & Accommodation Waiver
- The tuition fee waiver applies each year, provided students meet progression criteria.
- Accommodation waiver covers a lower-band ensuite room for up to 52 weeks per year.
- Students wishing to upgrade their accommodation must pay the difference.
- Accommodation is not guaranteed if application deadlines are missed.
Scholarship Withdrawal Policy
The scholarship will be withdrawn if:
- False information is provided.
- A student switches to part-time study.
- The applicant defers their entry.
- The student changes courses and starts again at Year 1.
- A student withdraws or is suspended from Brunel University.
