PhD Scholarships on Clean Water Technologies at University of Canterbury

Clean Water Technologies PHD Scholarship:

Seeking highly motivated applicants to join ambitious and multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional research programme. In collaboration with Māori partners, will engineer novel biomaterials for sustainable water treatment. Will take advantage of recent advances in 3-D printing (and other bio fabrication methods) to create bespoke treatment media from biological wastes. Will then use these sustainable products to clean-up wastewater and storm water in Aotearoa NZ.

Scholarship Award

The current scholarship emolument is NZ$27,500 (tax-free) per year. The scholarship also covers tuition fees for the thesis enrolment at the New Zealand domestic rate for the term of the scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Tenable for full-time study towards a PhD degree only at the University of Auckland for a period of 3 years
  • Excellent academic record (Bachelor of Hons, 1st in Engineering/Science for domestic students and a Masters for International students)
  • Strong written skills
  • Outstanding ability in either materials science, synthetic chemistry, lab-based microbiology, water quality engineering or Life Cycle Assessment Modelling applied to engineering.
  • Skills in Additive Manufacturing such as 3D printing an advantage for the material science position.
  • Candidates who can start within New Zealand by mid 2021.

All of the below material must be coherently included in your application:

  • A full academic transcript- ideally with a Bachelor of Science 1st Class Honors (domestic students) or a relevant Master’s degree (international students).
  • A 1-pg statement of your career goals and previous research experience.
  • A 2-pg max curriculum vitae emphasizing courses completed and any publications.
  • Statements from two referees that focus on the applicant’s:
    • academic ability;
    • social ability to work as part of a vibrant research team;
    • independent knowledge ability and written and oral English communication ability (particularly for nonnative English applicants).
  • The referee statements may be sent either with, or separate to, the application from the candidate, but must be received by the closing date. A contact phone number and email of the referee should be provided in their statement.
  • Applicants holding a Masters degree are expected to have one of more peer-reviewed publications (incl. those in review). Please attach all English conference or journal publications and theses.
  • For non-native English speakers: Evidence of sufficient English communication [The minimum requirements are either: (1) a TOEFL score greater than 90, of which writing must be greater than 20; or (2) a IELTS score of 6.5 with no section lower than  6.0. See HERE for details]
