2017 PhD Scholarships for International Students in Transnational Studies, Germany

Applications are invited for PhD scholarships at the Berlin Graduate School of Transnational Studies. This three-year English language doctoral programme is designed for exceptionally talented and motivated international students for September 2017 intake.

The programme offers state-of-the-art survey classes, solid training in research methods and research design, soft skills courses, and individualised supervision.

The Berlin Graduate School for Transnational Studies is a cooperative project of three outstanding scientific institutes and institutions: the Freie Universität Berlin (FUB), the Hertie School of Governance (HSoG), and the Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB).

If students are not a native English speaker, or if the language of instruction at their previous university was not English, they will need to provide evidence of strong English language skills.

Degree Level: Scholarships are available for pursuing PhD programme.

Available Subject: Scholarships are awarded in the field of Transnational Studies.

Scholarship Benefits: Two PhD positions for international (non-German) students are funded by the Graduate School Scholarship Programme (GSSP) of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for a period of three years. Two further PhD positions for students with Chinese citizenship are funded by the Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC).

Eligibility: Anyone who has completed a master’s degree in social sciences comprising the equivalent of 120 ECTS credits (for a total of 300 ECTS credits including the bachelor’s degree) is eligible to apply. The term “social sciences” refers to political science, sociology, and history as well as to economics and law. The programme is open to applicants of all nationalities and shows no preference to EU citizens.

Nationality: International students can apply for these scholarships.

Entrance Requirement: Applicants must have completed a master’s degree in social sciences.

English Language Requirement: The C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages translates into other tests as follows (scores indicated are minimums):

  • IELTS: 6.5
  • TOEFL PBT: 603/677
  • TOEFL CBT: 263/300
  • TOEFL IBT: 110/120
  • TOEIC: 785

How to Apply: All applicants will automatically be considered for a BTS scholarship during the review process. Candidates selected for a nomination for a DAAD or a CSC scholarship have to submit yet another application to the respective funding organisation, which makes the final decision. Required documents

  • Master’s degree with distinction, qualifying for PhD studies in political science, international relations, sociology, economics, law, or related disciplines;
  • Proof of C1-level English language skills or the equivalent;
  • Most recent CV;
  • Letter of motivation (600 words maximum);
  • Research proposal (5,000 words maximum) with a timeline for your project;
  • Two letters of reference from professors at universities or research institutions.
