South Africa University of Cape Town Marine Research Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship 2018

Applications are invited for the postdoctoral research fellowship at the Marine Research Institute (Ma-Re) University of Cape Town, South Africa. Fellowship is available for international students.

The candidate must have experience with the implementation of regional or global ocean numerical models, data analysis and visualization.

The Institute’s principal focus is research, which underpins its teaching, training, capacity development and consultancy activities. Hence it brings together active researchers in the field who add value to and benefit from this collaborative structure. At the Institution, observation, measurement, and collection of samples and data are accomplished by ship cruises, field trips and remote sensing by satellite. The institute’s array of multi-disciplinary researchers is involved in exciting inter-disciplinary projects. The Ma-Re Institute was officially constituted in October 2006 as one of the first signature themes at UCT. This was the culmination of a consultative process involving all marine researchers at UCT. To establish UCT as an internationally recognized hub of excellence, and a premier higher education institution for multi-disciplinary marine research, teaching and training in Africa and the southern hemisphere.

Degree Level: Fellowship is available to the postdoctoral research programme.

Available Subject: Ma-Re seeks a Research Associate (UCT post-doctoral research fellow) as part of the international project “Humpback Whales in a Changing Climate”, in collaboration with Australia and other South African universities. The candidate will develop the modelling component of the project to study the role of ocean conditions in determining the migratory patterns in the Southern Ocean and along the eastern coast of South Africa. A combination of large scale and regional scale ocean models will be used, in conjunction with ocean biogeochemistry models of various complexities.
